2022:
May 2-7, 2022
Dr. David Koon, Dr. Vincent Michel and Dr. Robert Belding made a one week visit to the Hospital Lumiere to evaluate the earthquake damage, to see if resuming work there was possible and to determine if our work with the Haitian residency program was possible. Haiti is still under a level 4 travel advisory by the US. Fully vaccinated Americans can enter Haiti without other testing or precautions. Returning to the US requires a COVID test which the hospital administers. To avoid the violence around Port au Prince we took Sunrise Airways from Port to Cayes. This is a 20 minute flight. We did not encounter any violence or threats while in Haiti. Dr. Pierre Woolley and Dr. Peter Jumelle who are in charge of the Haitian residency were encouraged that SCOA is considering restarting the exchange program. Dr. Koon is planning a return trip in September.

Drs. David Koon and Chris Hydorn, USC ortho are the first team to visit Hospital Lumiere since March 2020. They did 23 major ortho cases and cared for 62 clinic patients and 38 inpatients in one week. Dr. Jean Maxime Dumesle, resident PGY4 HUP, was the only resident to accompany the team due to Covid19 and level 4 travel alert. The future of the residency exchange program for this year depends on these two issues. |

Dr. Robert Belding made a one week visit to Hospital Lumiere to see how the modification of leadership was going and to encourage the staff as best I could. Harvest Call is trying to promote Haitian leaders they have been training over the years to more prominent leadership rolls. Please Pray for the hospital in this new endeavor. Dr. Koon, the president of the SCOA Foundation is trying to organize the trips to Haiti in the future. With the improvement in travel and the decrease in crime in Port we are hopeful this will be possible.

The Greenville group led by Dr. Tim Brown and fifth year GHS resident Dr. Michael Koerner and Doctors Stephanie Justinville and Richard Jean Jacque from Hospital de la Paix in Port au Prince now hold the all time record for cases done in a day (11), cases done for the week and number of inpatients seen. Not only was this due to the team being one of our outstanding teams, but also the reputation of the orthopedic program at Hospital Lumiere is growing as our teams continue to do great work. This begins the fourth year of the residency exchange program with the three orthopedic residency programs in South Carolina and the orthopedic residency at Hospital de la Paix. The group presented lectures to the residents in Port and made rounds at HUP. They did 30 major surgical cases and had 51 inpatients to round on. The clinic was lighter than usual with 53 patients. Dr. Mukkuaka Oda, The staff orthopedist at Hospital Lumiere has made our work much easier and focused on the more difficult cases.
