Chair, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery
Brigham and Women's Hospital
James D. Kang, M.D. is the current Chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and The Thornhill Family Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School.   A spine surgery specialist, Dr. Kang was previously the Vice-Chairman of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and UPMC Endowed Professor in Spinal Surgery. Dr. Kang has become an international leader in the basic science and clinical treatment of intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD).  During his tenure as Director of the Ferguson Laboratory at UPMC,  Dr. Kang led the development of novel therapies for IDD based on the latest gene transfer and stem cell technologies.  Currently, Dr. Kang’s research team is performing comprehensive preclinical studies addressing feasibility, safety and efficacy of these technologies.  The results to date have garnered much favorable international attention, strongly suggesting that cell and molecular approaches have excellent potential for making the translation from the laboratory to the clinic.

In recognition of his career-long interest and scientific work, Dr. Kang is the recipient of numerous awards including the highest societal awards for spinal research conferred by the leading international spine societies:  The International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine, the Cervical Spine Research Society, and the North American Spine Society.

Dr. Kang, who has a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from Washington University in St. Louis, completed his medical degree at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in 1986.  This was followed by a general surgery internship and an orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1992.  He then completed a spine surgery fellowship at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland under the mentorship of Dr. Henry Bohlman.  He held a faculty position at the University of Pittsburgh continuously since 1993 until his recent transition to the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in 2015.
